Getting to Stockholm
The flight into Stockholm is absolutely gorgeous. Before starting your sailing vacation in Sweden, you will start your adventure in Stockholm. The airport is quite far from the city center of Stockholm, so you will need to coordinate getting into the city. There are 5 primary ways to get into the city:
Uber - This can sometimes be a cheaper option if you are not alone and want to avoid taking public transportation.
Slow Train - This is the cheapest option if you are traveling alone and is only 20 minutes slower than the fast train.
Taxi - Don’t do it, the other options are way better
Arlanda Express - Usually this is the best option and the cheapest, especially if you can get a group ticket with other people. Trip is only 18 minutes.
Bus - If you are willing to take a bus and buy your ticket ahead of time, you could save a lot of money by doing this option
Traveling By Arlanda Express to Stockholm
Assuming that you will take the fast train into Stockholm for your sailing vacation in Sweden, after you pick up your luggage look for a ticket machine that looks like the photo below. If you are able to coordinate with other yachtlifers, the tickets get cheaper for groups of 2 or more. The machines will only take credit card and they have an option to switch to the english option.
After you purchase your ticket you will look for a series of elevators that will take you to the train. Below is a picture of the Arlanda Express elevators. Once you are on the elevator and get on the train, it will be a short 18 minute ride to the center of Stockholm. Make sure to get your ticket prior to boarding, there will be a person that walks around and checks your ticket and if you do not have one, you will be paying a lot more money.
Environmental Impact
When on your sailing vacation in Sweden, it is important to have the lowest impact on the environment. The Arlanda Express train provides the lowest impact to the environment because it runs 100% on green electricity, or electricity labelled a “Good Environmental Choice.” This means that renewable energies, such as hydropower, wind power and biofuels, are used to power the train to Stockholm.
Once in Stockholm
The Arlanda Express will drop you off in the middle of Stockholm. There are taxis right outside the station. Please note, the taxis are unregulated in Sweden. This means that you have to negotiate for a fixed price or ask that a meter be used. Yachtlife advises that you stick with Uber or walk to the hotel (if its close enough). The scooter industry is also very large in Stockholm, so if you don’t have that much luggage, you can also utilize one of them such as lime.
