Things to do around St Thomas
If you are arriving a day early or staying late for your sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands, very often you will get the pleasure of spending that day on St Thomas. St Thomas is a U.S. territory and has the largest population of all the U.S. Virgin Islands, roughly 50% of all the population. It is often hard to get a taxi around St Thomas so the best option is once you check into your hotel, arrange for a taxi driver to do a tour of the whole island stoping at the local hot spots.
Places to Stay: There are two areas Yachtlife recommends staying in St Thomas. Because it is often hard to get around St Thomas, we would recommend staying close to Coki Point Beach, where you can take the “redhook” ferry over to the British Virgin Islands. The other (and usually better option for less than 24 hour stays) is close to the Charlotte Amalie ferry terminal.
Note about taxis: Taxis are very hard to get around St Thomas if you are not in a heavily populated area. Yachtlife recommends making sure you keep one or two taxi numbers on you at all time. Uber and Lyft are not available on the island. Most taxis do not carry meters, so expect to negotiate every taxi ride, usually they will charge a flat rate per person.
Coki Point Beach
Coki Point Beach is the top recommended spot to visit while you are in St Thomas. The waters are crystal clear, the bars are many, and there are even water toys to rent. If you are looking to just spend your whole day at a beach, this would be the place to do it. Coki Point Beach also has an aquarium next door that you can go visit and learn about the various local sea life.
The Top of St Thomas!
The very top of St Thomas is quite the sight to see. The taxi drive itself with transform the island in a completely different setting. As you make your way up to the top, you will start to see vegetation that makes you feel like you are going through a rain forrest. To live your best Yachtlife, we recommend taking an open air taxi to the top so you can see the environment the best. When you are at the top, you will be able to see the British Virgin Islands that you will you will visit during your sailing itinerary and the other surrounding islands.
There is also a daiquiri bar at the very top where you can visit a great tourist gift shop and enjoy a few cocktails while viewing the sights. They claim to have the best Banana daiquiri in the world!
Green House Restaurant & Bar
A yachtlife favorite restaurant to meet at is Green House Restaurant & Bar. It has a great happy hour menu (2-for-1) drinks and ample space for people to mingle and get to know one another. The wifi is also very reliable here if you are staying at a nearby hotel.
