Anegada, BVI

Anegada, BVI is one of the most beautiful stops you can have during your BVI sailing itinerary. It is the second largest island in the British Virgin Islands, but only has about 285 residents around the island. Anegada is also the only island in the British Virgin Islands you will visit on your sailing vacation that is made from coral and limestone. The other islands in the BVI come from a volcanic origin. This makes the island incredibly flat and fun to explore!

During your stay on Anegada, BVI you will explore the island either by renting mopeds or by renting a car. There is a taxi that will drive you around, but it is not always available when you want to leave locations around the island. Most yachtlifers love the island so much that they spend a second night on the island.

The Wildlife

Anegada, BVI is home to several unique wildlife. In the 1800s, the flamingo population on the island was in the thousands. However, it was hunted so much for food, that it nearly went extinct on the island. The government worked to protect the birds and there are a few hundred now safely on the island. The island has set up a perch to observe and learn about the flamingos.

Besides the flamingos, there is an iguana sanctuary that helps protect the animal. The iguana nearly went extinct because of ferrel cats around the island who hunted them. To help the population, they are grown in a facility until they reach a certain size and can protect themselves from other animals. If you are an animal lover, this is a unique stop to add on your BVI sailing itinerary.
